Specialist Jared F. Smith Class of 2010

United States Army

Army Commendation Medal with "V" Device

For exceptional achievement with valor in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. SPC Jared F. Smith, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 391st Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne) while serving as a Compound Guard in the Ganci Complex on 6 April 2004 came under intense enemy rocket and mortar attack, which caused massive casualties and injuries. While his comrades provided security for the compound and under continuing mortar and rocket fire, SPC Smith, with no regard for his own safety, administered first aid to his wounded comrades and detainees. These actions saved the lives of the detainees and fellow soldiers and prevented the situation from escalating into a riot which would have caused the deaths of additional detainees. SPC Smith’s calmness under extreme pressure during mass casualty situations helped regain control of the Ganci complex of the Baghdad Central Correctional Facility. His actions reflect great credit upon himself, the 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne) and the United States Army.
