Citation

For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force: Sergeant First Class SPEAKMAN distinguished himself by heroic action on 22 March 1972 while serving as Senior Advisor, Mobile Advisory Team #138, Truc Giang District, Kien Hoa Province, Republic of Vietnam. On this date the Truc Giang District Headquarters was subjected to intense enemy mortar fire and a sweeping ground attack by a Viet Cong force. Sergeant SPEAKMAN, with complete disregard for his own safety, volunteered himself and the Kit Carson Scout Company to assist a reaction force in reaching the besieged compound. Enroute to the district compound area the column encountered B-40 rocket fire and Sergeant SPEAKMAN immediately deployed the Scout Company and returned fire until the rocket attack was repelled. Upon reaching the compound, Sergeant SPEAKMAN deployed the Scout Company. They began disarming satchel charges and searching for the enemy. Once the area was secure, Sergeant SPEAKMAN assisted in the relocation of ammunition from burning bunkers and in the evacuation of wounded personnel. Sergeant First Class SPEAKMAN’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
