For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force: on 11 June 1966, Private First Class Sawyer, Company C, 2nd Battalion, 28th Infantry, was traveling with the command group of C Company. When his unit contacted and was attacked by a numerically superior Viet Cong force, Private First Class Sawyer without order and with complete disregard for his personal safety exposed himself to fierce hostile small arms and automatic weapons fire in order to effect ammunition resupply to a besieged platoon. Having engaged an estimated two companies of Viet Cong entrenched in fortified positions at the top of a hill, one of the platoons soon reported it was dangerously low on ammunition. Helicopters from the base camp dropped ammunition behind their lines. Too heavily engaged to retrieve the ammunition, the platoon was helpless. Without order, Private First Class Sawyer ran through the barrage of Viet Cong fire to the ammunition. Dragging it back, he approached to within 20 meters of the platoon before he was stopped by heavy small arms and automatic weapons fire. Without attempting to move further he opened the ammunition cans and raising up on one elbow, he threw the boxes of small arms ammunition up and down the line. Relieved of his burden, he dashed forward and took up a position with the platoon. There he laid down a base of fire against the Viet Cong giving the platoon valuable time to reload their weapons. Private First Class Sawyer’s outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty, and personal bravery is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division and the United States Army.
