For heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam. Warrant Officer Loudon distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 7 November 1969, while serving as pilot during a combat assault near Quan Loi, Republic of Vietnam. When the assault formation came under intense enemy fire, one of the helicopters received hits and burst into flames, forcing it to make an emergency landing. Warrant Officer Loudon, with complete disregard for his own safety, followed the aircraft down, exposing himself to more enemy fire to extract the downed crew, his aircraft sustained several hits but Warrant Officer Loudon was still able to successfully extract the downed crew. Warrant Officer Loudon’s outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
