Major David J. Larcomb Class of 2007

					Distinguished Flying Cross

United States Army

Distinguished Flying Cross
Citation

For heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the Republic of Vietnam on 18 January 1970. Major Larcomb distinguished himself while serving as aircraft commander of the command and control helicopter on a search and rescue mission near the A Shau Valley, Republic of Vietnam. The previous day a helicopter had been shot down and due to extremely poor weather conditions, the lone survivor had not been located. Major Larcomb initiated the extraction mission by coordinating with previous rescue teams to pinpoint the crash site. Twice he was forced to fly to Quang Tri to refuel in order to continue to search. A slight improvement in the weather enabled the search team to locate the aircraft and Major Larcomb then coordinated the extraction of the survivor. His actions during the seven-hour operation contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Major Larcomb’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
