For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving with Headquarters and Service Company, Third Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, Third Marine Division (Reinforced) in the Republic of Vietnam. On 7 September 1967, Chief Warrant Officer Richard L. Holycross was serving as Platoon Commander, 81 mm Mortar Platoon when the Battalion came under attack by an estimated North Vietnamese Army Regiment southwest of Con Thien. The main attack was preceded by a rocket, artillery and mortar barrage, which caused great havoc on his section of the perimeter. With full knowledge of the hazards involved, and with complete disregard for his own personal safety, he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire to reorganize and reassure his men. Moving from man to man he personally led and directed their fire in repelling an attack, which would have penetrated the Battalion Command Post. During the ensuing firefight, Chief Warrant Officer Holycross commanded an antitank weapon and effectively brought devastating fire on the enemy. By his dynamic leadership, gallant fighting spirit and loyal devotion to duty in the face of overwhelming odds, Chief Warrant Officer Holycross was instrumental in repulsing the enemy attack. His great personal valor reflected great credit upon himself, the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
