					Distinguished Flying Cross

United States Army

Bronze Star with "V" Device
Citation

For heroism in ground combat in the Republic of Vietnam on 18 July 1969. Specialist Gulas distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 18 July 1969 while serving as a rifleman in Long An Province, Republic of Vietnam. During a search and destroy operation, Specialist Gulas, as point-man, entered a nipa palm grove and engaged the enemy. He was immediately forced to take cover as he received heavy automatic fire from three enemy soldiers and two previously undetected bunkers. Unhesitatingly, Specialist Gulas crawled forward despite the intense hostile fire and proceeded to throw hand grenades and engage the enemy with his M16. Specialist Gulas’ aggressive action caused the enemy to flee their fortified positions, as he continued forward and destroyed five bunkers with hand grenades. Through his courage, Specialist Gulas was most instrumental in the success of the mission. Specialist Gulas’ personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
