Silver Star Medal

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in armed conflict against the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong aggressors in the Mekong Delta Region of the Republic of Vietnam on 11 April 1969. As Provincial Reconnaissance Unit (PRU) Advisor, Petty Officer SHADDUCK and 30 of his PRU were mobilized to participate in the defense of Vinh Long City against three enemy battalions. Assigned as the only ground force to protect the strategic airfield in Vinh Long, he and his PRU engaged a Viet Cong battalion who was heavily armed with mortar, B-40 and B-41 rockets, automatic weapons and small arms. During the long battle, he remained at the front line directing and encouraging his PRU in Beating back the enemy onslaught; however, two individuals were wounded, exposed and cut off from the main friendly position. He outlined a plan to the senior Vietnamese PRU calling for a heavy volume of fire while attempting to rescue the wounded. Then in complete disregard for his own safety and under withering enemy fire, he maneuvered to the side of one of the wounded and carried him back through the hail of fire until he reached safety. Two PRU assisted to aid the other wounded man. The battle ended with the withdrawal of the severely crippled battalion and the saving of the Vinh Long airfield. Petty Officer SHADDUCK's uncommon valor provided the inspiration to his PRU and permitted the defeat of a numerically superior enemy unit. Petty Officer SHADDUCK's actions were in keeping with highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
