Specialist Four John G. Henderson, Jr. Class of 2014

Medal of Honor

United States Army

Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device

For heroism in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force: SP4 Henderson distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 18 August 1968 when a large Viet Cong assault force assaulted the Nui Ba Den Base Camp. When the alert was called, and the enemy was reported to be inside the perimeter, volunteers were called to act as a reactionary force; SP4 Henderson hurriedly armed himself and ran from his billets to join the base camp reactionary force. As a forward member of the reactionary force, SP4 Henderson was assigned, with the rest of his team, to retake the helicopter pad and surrounding area. Although drawing heavy small arms fire and being repeatedly exposed to exploding Rocket Propelled Grenade rounds, SP4 Henderson repeatedly moved to the vanguard of the action to lay down a base of fire that was highly instrumental in containing the ground assault to a well defined area where it was all but decimated by small arms fire and mortar action. Relentlessly, SP4 Henderson, and the rest of the team, continued to direct their fire to insure that the enemy penetration was blocked. At first light, the fire team, after a short exchange of small arms fire, reached the perimeter bunkers to ascertain the extent of the casualties and to aid the wounded. SP4 Henderson’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
