Medal of Honor

United States Navy

Distinguished Flying Cross

For heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as Commander and Pilot of a Patrol Plane during a coordinated attack on an enemy submarine in the Caribbean Sea on August 6, 1943. Undeterred by intense and continuous antiaircraft fire from the surfaced submarine, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Dresbach unhesitatingly started his approach run for an attack. While flying at high airspeed and rapidly closing the range on his target, he was mortally wounded by enemy fire. The depth charges released on this run contributed materially to the eventual destruction of the hostile vessel and the capture of her crew. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Dresbach’s superb airmanship and cool courage in the face of grave danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
