For heroic achievement in aerial flight while serving as an Aerial Gunner with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 362 on 7 September 1967, in connection with operations against insurgent Communist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Vietnam. Corporal BUSH’s aircraft was the lead aircraft in a section of two UH34D helicopters which was assigned an emergency medical evacuation mission three miles southwest of Con Thien, Republic of Vietnam. Corporal BUSH’s aircraft made an uneventful approach and landing into the zone and successfully rescued three badly wounded United States Marines. During the climbout from the landing zone, the aircraft came under heavy automatic weapons fire from the enemy. With an enemy bullet in his thigh, Corporal BUSH commenced returning heavy and accurate suppressive fire while holding his bullet torn thigh with his free hand. As a result of Corporal BUSH’s exceptional courage and professional skill, the mission was completed and three wounded Marines were successfully evacuated from the hazardous area. Corporal BUSH’s inspiring action, selfless courage, and unfaltering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest tradition of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
