Army Commendation Medal with "V" Device

For valorous service in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as a gunner for Task Force Iron Claw, SPC Scarpino, exposed and under constant threat of attack by enemy small arms fire, indirect fire, RPG fire, Improvised Explosive Devices and Vehicle Borne IEDs. On 1 July 2005, during an RPG attack, SPC Scarpino with total disregard for his own safety, instinctively provided crew served weapon support from his vehicle, this action allowed the vehicle he was in to be repaired and returned to the mission allowing successful completion of the patrol. SPC Scarpino's actions of selflessly protecting the other members of the combat patrol; allowed the Iron Claw patrol to successfully clear IEDs during thousands of miles of combat reconnaissances in Baghdad. His actions reflect distinct credit upon him, 512th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Combat Group, 3rd Infantry Division and the United States Army.
