Captain (then First Lieutenant) WALTER H. KROPP, Infantry, Headquarters, (then Company "K"), 15th Infantry Regiment. At midnight on 29 March 1945, while leading his company in an assault on Oberostera, Germany, Captain KROPP charged into a hail of enemy rifle fire to enter a house and single handedly engaged the enemy within it. Despite bullets glancing from the pavement all about him, he dashed into the house, killing one German and capturing three others. When a sniper opened up from a nearby belfry, Captain KROPP shot and killed the German. Consistently out in front of his Company he led it with such aggressiveness and skill that a force of 300 Germans were routed, the town wrested from the enemy, thirty-five killed, fifty captured, and itself suffering but seven casualties. Residence: Bexley, Ohio.
