For heroic achievement in connection with operations against the enemy while serving with a Marine infantry battalion in KOREA on 7 July 1952. During the hours of darkness when the battalion was engaged in attacking a well entrenched enemy, Staff Sergeant EVANS volunteered to lead a detail to the scene to evacuate the wounded. Displaying exceptional courage, he fearlessly led the detail to the assault elements, although continually exposed to intense enemy small arms, mortar and artillery fire. Realizing the imperative need of evacuation parties at the forward most units which were pinned down by enemy fire, he led his detail forward and proceeded to evacuate the casualties. Although stunned and bruised from enemy mortar fire, he dauntlessly continued aiding the wounded throughout the entire night. During the withdrawal he provided covering fire for the evacuation party. Staff Sergeant EVANS' selfless devotion to duty and calm manner while under fire were an inspiration to all who observed him. His heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. Staff Sergeant EVANS is authorized to wear the combat "V".
