For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Four Hooks distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 6 October 1969, while serving as a medic in Tay Ninh Province, Republic of Vietnam. When the patrol came under intense rocket and light weapons fire from an unknown size enemy force, Specialist Four Hooks distinguished himself by moving from a secure position and braving intense enemy fire in order to administer first aid to the casualties. He repeatedly exposed himself to the hostile fire as he moved from one casualty to another, aiding them and assuring that they were safely moved from the contact area. He skillfully directed the dangerous and extremely necessary task of evacuating the casualties from the contact area by air. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
