Corporal Melvin F. Durfey, Infantry, Company H, 28th Infantry Regiment, for gallantry in action on 13 July 1944 in the vicinity of La Haye du Puits, Normandy, France. Although it was not his duty, Corporal Durfey exposed himself to intense enemy artillery fire by moving about on the battlefield, directing and assisting aid men in removing wounded and administering first aid. While performing this courageous act he himself was hit several places but continued despite his wounds until he was forced to be evacuated. Entered the military service from Ohio.
