Staff Sergeant Joseph Solvey Class of 2009

Silver Star Medal

United States Army

Silver Star Medal
Citation

Staff Sergeant (Then Private First Class), Joseph Solvey, Infantry Company E, 104th Infantry Regiment, United States Army. For gallantry in action near Bettborn, Luxembourg on 22 December 1944: During a morning attack by Company E in the vicinity of Bettborn on 22 December 1944, Staff Sergeant Solvey, then a Private First Class and a member of a bazooka team, declined evacuation despite physical infirmities which made it very difficult for him to walk and he was in severe pain. The attack progressed until the company met with extremely heavy enemy resistance in the form of artillery, mortar, tank and small arms fire. Observing an enemy tank firing at the company's positions, Staff Sergeant Solvey moved in the face of enemy fire to a point close to the tank and with three well aimed projectiles from his bazooka he put the tank out of action. With this obstacle removed, the company was enabled to move through to take its objective. At this point, Staff Sergeant Solvey returned to the aid station from which point he was evacuated. His brilliant display of courage, initiative and outstanding devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Staff Sergeant Solvey and the armed forces of the United States.
