For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Captain Prieser distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 10 January 1968 while riding as a passenger with Second Lieutenant Otis A. Shirley Jr, Enroute to Detachment A-223, Camp Van Canh. Three miles from Camp Van Canh, two VC were observed crossing the road approximately five hundred feet to their front. At the same instant, they started receiving hostile fire from an estimated VC squad. With complete disregard for his safety, Captain Prieser immediately and fearlessly took command of the situation and instructed Lieutenant Shirley to halt the vehicle, take cover and implement an effective two man defense. Again, without regard for his own safety, Captain Prieser fearlessly exposed himself to enemy fire to return to the vehicle for a resupply of ammunition when he realized their supply was low. After beating off the enemy and firing had ceased, Captain Prieser again exposed himself and gave covering fire while Lieutenant Shirley turned the vehicle around to proceed back to the nearest Korean Outpost to report this incident. Although wounded in the right leg through his courage and outstanding leadership, Captain Prieser contributed immeasurably in stopping what could have been a disastrous ambush, saving the life of Lieutenant Shirley and himself and prevented the possible capture or destruction of US property. Captain Prieser’s personal bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
