For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam on 15 July 1971. Sergeant Gragg distinguished himself while serving as a driver during combat operations in Quang Tri Province, Republic of Vietnam. While enroute to a resupply point a tank in Sergeant Gragg’s squad detonated an enemy antitank mine. The tank immediately caught fire and the ammunition began to explode. After setting up a security defense, Sergeant Gragg rushed to help the crew out of the burning tank. Disregarding his own safety, he climbed on the burning vehicle and assisted the driver out of his compartment before he was seriously injured. After the rest of the men were helped from the wreckage Sergeant Gragg administered first aid to the injured personnel until the medical evacuation helicopter arrived. His efforts were instrumental in saving the lives of his comrades. Sergeant Gragg’s heroic actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
