MARCUS CAMPBELL, Private First Class, 397th Infantry Regiment, for heroic achievement in action on 4 April 1945, in the vicinity of Heilbronn, Germany. When a rifle platoon was immobilized by enemy automatic weapons fire, Private Campbell crept forward in full view of the enemy to a point of vantage overlooking the hostile position. Despite the fact that the full volume of enemy fire was now being directed at him, he remained in position and fired his carbine again and again, forcing the enemy to flee. As a result of his heroic, daring, and devoted action, Private Campbell single-handedly silenced the enemy strong point, and allowed his unit to proceed to the ultimate successful completion of its mission. Entered Military Service from Cincinnati, Ohio.
