Citation
For heroism in connection with ground operations against a
hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: First Lieutenant
Weist distinguished himself by valorous actions on
22 August 1968 as the assistant executive officer of an artillery
battery during an enemy attack on Fire Support Base Rawlins
III. Despite the mortar and rocket rounds falling around his
position, he remained at his post to direct counterfire on
acquired enemy targets. When wire communications to the guns
were knocked out, he left the safety of the fire direction
center and braved the intense enemy barrage to personally
direct the howitzer’s fire. He then volunteered to act
as a forward observer. He and his radio operator crawled to
an exposed observation point on the camp’s perimeter
and began adjusting devastating artillery onto the assaulting
enemy soldiers, inflicting heavy casualties to them. He continued
to adjust this fire until dawn, repeatedly subjecting himself
to enemy automatic weapons and sniper fire. First Lieutenant
Weist’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in
keeping with the highest traditions of the military service
and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United
States Army. |
