Specialist Five Howard S. Daugherty Class of 2006

United States Army

Air Medal with "V" Device
Citation

For heroism while participating in aerial flight. Specialist Five Daugherty distinguished himself by heroic action on 9 February 1968 in the Republic of Vietnam. On that date, Specialist Daugherty was serving as crew chief and gunner on an armed UH-1C helicopter which was providing close air support for a ground unit that was engaged with a numerically superior North Vietnamese Army force. The insurgents had advanced to within 25 to 50 meters of the friendly perimeter and the friendly forces were low on ammunition and out of marking smoke. As his aircraft made repeated passes at the heavily defended hostile emplacements, Specialist Daugherty exhibited complete disregard for his own safety as he leaned outside the aircraft to place suppressive fire on the enemy. Despite intense automatic weapons fire, he continued to place extremely accurate fire upon the enemy positions surrounding the beleaguered company. As a result of his heroic actions, the infantry unit was able to reorganize its men and successfully repel the enemy assaults. Specialist Five Daugherty’s courageous actions and devotion to duty are in keeping with highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the Americal Division and the United States Army.
