Captain Donald H. Sloan Class of 2006

					Distinguished Flying Cross

United States Army

Silver Star
Citation

For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: Captain Sloan distinguished himself on 25 November 1969 in the vicinity of Bu Prang. While serving at the Fire Support Coordination Center, the Special Forces outpost at Bu Prang received a heavy enemy mortar, rocket and recoilless rifle attack. Without regard for his own safety, Captain Sloan displayed remarkable courage by running through the impacting rounds to render emergency medical treatment to several wounded personnel. At one point, while assisting an indigenous soldier to the safety of a bunker, he was caught in the open and exposed to an intense recoilless rifle attack. He unhesitatingly threw himself across the wounded man to protect him from further injury. During a lull, he took charge of a litter party and assisted in removing other injured soldiers to safety for treatment. When the camp came under heavy fire again, Captain Sloan continued to exhibit exemplary courage and leadership he led the evacuation of many fallen comrades. Captain Sloan’s devotion to duty and personal bravery were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
