Staff Sergeant Joseph R. Brandt, Jr. Class of 2006

					Distinguished Flying Cross

United States Army

Bronze Star with "V" Device
Citation

For heroism in connection with military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Staff Sergeant Brandt distinguished himself while serving as a Platoon Sergeant with Company A, 1st Battalion, 22d Infantry, 4th Infantry Division. On 3 November 1969, Staff Sergeant Brandt’s unit was conducting a reconnaissance operation in the An Lao valley when they were engaged by an unknown size enemy force. In the initial contact, several personnel, including the company commander were wounded. Realizing that the medics could not effectively treat the wounded under intense enemy fire, Sergeant Brandt organized his men and placed heavy fire on the enemy positions. This pinned the enemy down and enabled the medics to move about. With the wounded taken care of, Sergeant Brandt again rallied his men and moved against the enemy positions. Staff Sergeant Brandt’s brave actions, outstanding leadership and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
