Private First Class Leo J. Schlotterer Class of 2006

					Distinguished Flying Cross

United States Army

Bronze Star with "V" Device
Citation

For heroism not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: On 8 January 1969, Private First Class Schlotterer was serving as a machine gunner with his mechanized company on a battalion-minus reconnaissance in force operation along Highway 13 west of An Loc. Upon making contact with an undetermined size, well entrenched hostile force, Private First Class Schlotterer immediately placed a devastating volume of machinegun fire on the enemy positions, thereby preventing them from being able to get clear shots with their rocket-propelled grenade launchers. During the fire fight, Private First Class Schlotterer repeatedly braved the vicious enemy fusillade in order to obtain an unobstructed view of the treacherous area and the aggressors’ emplacements. When he expended all his ammunition, he again exposed himself to the withering hail of hostile rounds as he maneuvered to another track for resupply. His courageous initiative, bold determination, and outstanding professionalism were instrumental in the successful outcome of the encounter. Private First Class Schlotterer’s outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty, and personal bravery is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
