Citation

Major John P. McAnaw, Infantry, distinguished himself by heroic action while serving as the senior advisor to the 2d Battalion, 3d Regiment, 1st Infantry Division, Army of the Republic of Viet Nam on 10 July 1971. Major McAnaw participated in the planning and execution of a night raid on a North Vietnamese and Viet Cong Base Camp. Approaching the area, known to be heavily guarded and well mined, he placed himself in the lead element of the friendly force, guiding the main body. When a member of the lead element set off an enemy mine near the hostile camp, Major McAnaw joined the assault force in storming the enemy defenses. Exposing himself to small arms fire and mines, he gave continuous artillery fire support to the Army of the Republic of Vietnam he was advising. Throughout this action, he demonstrated outstanding professional skill and valor. Major McAnaw's heroic actions were in keeping in the highest traditions of the United States Army and reflect great credit upon himself and the military service.
