DISTINGUISHED FLYING CROSS
Citation

For heroism while participating in aerial flight as evidenced by voluntary action above and beyond the call of duty in the republic of Vietnam. SP4 Coburn distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 2 June 1969 while serving as a helicopter door gunner with Troop C, 1st Squadron (Airmobile), 9th Cavalry during a combat support operation at Landing Zone Phyllis, Republic of Vietnam. When an infantry platoon reported heavy enemy contact, SP4 Coburn's aircraft was instantly dispatched to the area. Observing a soldier trying to flank an enemy bunker, he directed his pilot to provide cover. Immediately the aircraft came under intense automatic weapons fire, which SP4 Coburn countered with a heavy volume of suppressive fire. When his machine gun's belt cracked, he leaped out of the aircraft, with complete disregard for his safety, to distribute white phosphorous at the hostile bunkers. His outstanding flying ability and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
