Bronze Star Medal w/"V" Device

For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 9 February 1945. Captain CLOSE, who distinguished himself by heroism, while serving as the Battalion S-3 for the 1st Battalion, 129th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division. He set off alone through the fierce battle being fought in the in the Paco District of Manila. Despite the fact that the area through which he had to travel was under enemy small arms and mortar fire, which he successfully evaded. He traveled several hundred yards in order to find and link up with elements of the 148th Infantry Regiment. He then directed them to supporting defensive positions on his regiment's exposed flank. Through his leadership and devotion to duty, he obtained information which was of utmost importance and influenced the subsequent action of his regiment. Captain CLOSE'S heroic actions on that day were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.

Captain Close's two additional Bronze Stars while awarded for meritorious achievement also reflect great deeds in the accomplishment of the mission.
