For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam; On 8 October 1969, Private First Class Makrancy was serving as a radio-telephone operator on a reconnaissance in force operation within an area of known enemy activity. As the friendly forces proceeded through the treacherous region, the lead element suddenly encountered an insurgent bunker complex. Acting with tactical deliberation, Private First Class Makrancy, immediately radioed situation reports between the friendly elements and the command group. When enemy movement was suddenly detected, Private First Class Makrancy unhesitatingly placed a devastating barrage of suppressive fire upon the aggressors until the enemy was completely routed... His courageous initiative and exemplary professionalism significantly contributed to the successful outcome of his unit's mission. Private First Class Makrancy's actions are in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division and the United States Army.
