For heroism in ground combat against an armed enemy force in the Republic of Vietnam, on 13 June 1969. Sergeant Lundgard distinguished himself by heroism while serving as a squad leader with Company B, 3/47th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division. His unit was on a reconnaissance in force operation aboard mobile riverine craft in Kien Hoa Province, Republic of Vietnam. Suddenly intense hostile fire opened up and in the midst of a barrage of B40 rockets and automatic weapons fire, a rocket landed inside the craft in which Sergeant Lundgard was riding. As a result of the initial attack, four men were killed and the remainder of his platoon was wounded. During the attack, without regard for his personal safety, Sergeant Lundgard constantly exposed himself to enemy fire and accurately returned fire. After the attack was over, Sergeant Lundgard aided the more seriously wounded and refused treatment for his own wounds until the more seriously wounded had been evacuated. He was later evacuated to Japan where he was hospitalized. Sergeant Lundgard's heroic actions that day were in keeping with the finest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
