For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force, not involving aerial flight. 2ndLt Funk distinguished himself by heroism while serving as Platoon Commander with 3rd Platoon, Company L, 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment. On 7 February 1968, during a mission to assist Company K near Gio Linh, Republic of Vietnam, When the company had gone about 500 meters outside the compound, the platoon came under intense enemy artillery fire. In order to get out of the impact area it was necessary to maneuver through some fairly thick brush. Lt. FUNK skillfully maneuvered his platoon and enabled the company to move forward maintaining physical contact and mutual support. With Lt. FUNK's platoon on-line, enemy contact was made with a well camouflaged enemy in foxholes. Lt FUNK continued to advance through the enemy and thoroughly routed them, although he was wounded in the neck, arm and hand Lt FUNK continued to lead and inspire his men. During the action, while in great pain, Lt. FUNK and his platoon accounted for at least 10 enemy dead. Lt. FUNK refused immediate medical treatment until he walked to the Base Camp a distance of about two miles, for treatment by the Battalion Surgeon. His heroic actions and deep concern for his fellow Marines are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and bring great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Marine Corps.
