For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force. Sergeant Black distinguished himself while serving as a Squad Leader with Company C, 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry. On 28 February 1967, during a daylight combat operation in Tay Ninh Province, Republic of Vietnam, Sergeant Black's squad came under hostile fire. Sergeant Black, while exposing himself to enemy fire on several occasions to direct the squad's fire, observed that one of his men had been bitten by a poisonous snake. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Black again exposed himself to the intense fire, ran forward to the man and killed the snake. He then administered first aid and carried the man to the rear for evacuation. His heroic actions and deep concern for his fellow soldier are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and bring great credit upon himself, his unit, the 196th Light Infantry Brigade and the United States Army.
