On 17 June 1864 while serving as a rifleman with Company I, 60th Ohio Infantry, Private Wageman’s unit came under heavy attack by well entrenched Confederate forces at Petersburg, Virginia. Early in the action Private Wageman was seriously wounded by the withering enemy fire yet he continued to fire his rifle until all the cartridges in his possession were expended. He was so seriously wounded; he had to be carried from the field of battle by his comrades. Private Wageman’s unselfish heroic actions on that date were an inspiration to his fellow soldiers and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and bring great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
