For gallantry in action involving close combat against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam: STAFF SERGEANT CAMPBELL distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on the afternoon of 8 May 1968, while serving as Platoon Sergeant with Company B, 3rd Battalion, 39th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division, on a reconnaissance in force mission in Saigon, Vietnam. While conducting a house to house search of the area, Sergeant Campbell’s platoon came under intense machine gun fire and several men were wounded. When the platoon leader went to assist a casualty, he was mortally wounded by an enemy bullet. Realizing the necessity to remove casualties from the exposed battlefield, Sergeant Campbell courageously moved through the intense barrage to assist a wounded comrade. Sergeant Campbell was seriously wounded while performing this valiant act. Staff Sergeant Campbell’s extraordinary heroism in close combat against a Viet Cong force is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division and United States Army.
