Staff Sergeant Paul F. Otto Class of 2013

Silver Star Medal

United States Army

Silver Star Medal

Staff Sergeant Paul F. Otto, formerly 36th Armd Infantry Regt, for gallantry in action against the enemy in Belgium on 16 and 17 January 1945. While acting as the Company Commander of Company "G" 3rd Battalion 36th Armored Infantry Regiment, after a vicious attack by the enemy which wiped out most of the company, Staff Sergeant Otto distinguished himself by gallantry in action against the German Army. While leading a patrol to reconnoiter a German position near a bridge, Staff Sergeant Otto gathered information regarding the disposition and strength of the enemy. Before he could return to friendly lines and render his report, the patrol was inundated by heavy enemy mortar fire. Though wounded and left for dead by his comrades, Staff Sergeant Otto continued to crawl through the heavy enemy mortar and small arms fire until he reached friendly lines and rendered his report. Staff Sergeant Otto's valorous actions that day were an inspiration to all who observed him and were instrumental in the routing of the enemy forces during the battle. His actions were in keeping with the highest values of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army. Entered military service from Ohio.
