First Lieutenant William J. Oberli Class of 2011

United States Army

Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device

For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force: Lieutenant Oberli distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 20 April 1967 in the Republic of Viet Nam. The platoon was conducting a search and destroy operation when they discovered an enemy base camp. Lieutenant Oberli, the platoon leader, put a cordon around the base camp to block all routes of escape and with complete disregard for his own safety and with the remainder of his platoon, began searching the base camp. As they advanced through the base camp, the search team members began to receive heavy enemy fire. Lieutenant Oberli moved among his men shouting instructions and pointing out enemy targets. After supervising the build-up of fire superiority, he led a vicious assault through the village which resulted in two Viet Cong being killed and two enemy prisoners being captured. Lieutenant Oberli's devotion to duty and personal courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
