Private First Class Emmett L. Mulroney Class of 2011

Silver Star Medal

United States Army

Silver Star Medal

For gallantry in action while engaged in military operations against an armed hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Private First Class Mulroney distinguished himself while serving as a Long Range Patrol Team member with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Brigade, 4th Infantry Division. While in his night location, Private First Class Mulroney observed a company sized force maneuvering toward his team's position. Immediately notifying his team of the approaching enemy, Private First Class Mulroney prepared a hasty ambush. Letting the enemy maneuver to within 10 meters of their position, the team engaged the enemy with intense small arms fire, inflicting heavy casualties and confusing the stunned NVA force. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private First Class Mulroney repeatedly exposed himself to murderous enemy fire as he stood up and threw numerous grenades at the advancing insurgents. When two team members moved forward to check for enemy dead and equipment, wounded team member Mulroney provided covering fire. After a short period of time, the enemy assaulted the position and quickly compromised Private First Class Mulroney's position. Fighting courageously in an attempt to hold his position, Private First Class Mulroney's position was overrun forcing him to run through the barrage of enemy fire and escape to the team's landing zone. Private First Class Mulroney's exceptional courage, determination and exemplary devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
