For heroism while participating in aerial flight: Warrant Officer James distinguished himself by heroic actions on 6 July 1969, while serving as an Aircraft Commander with Company A, 25th Aviation Battalion in the Republic of Vietnam. When a small Vietnamese Army outpost came under an intense enemy ground assault, Warrant Officer James immediately flew to the contact area to provide aerial support for the ground element. Upon arrival over the outpost, Warrant Officer James placed devastating fire on the hostile positions. Having expended his supply of ammunition, Warrant Officer James remained on station to aid in spotting the enemy positions. After refueling and rearming his helicopter, Warrant Officer James returned to the battle area. Although his aircraft was under intense enemy fire, Warrant Officer James continued to place devastating fire on the hostile positions. His valorous actions contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission and the thwarting of the aggressor force. Warrant Officer James' bravery and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
