Captain Clarence W. Sheward distinguished himself by extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Forward Air Controller in Southeast Asia on 28 June 1968. On that date while flying his unarmed observation aircraft, Captain Sheward was called upon to help a friendly outpost that was under heavy mortar attack. Upon arrival in the target area, Captain Sheward began his visual reconnaissance for the hostile mortar positions. Despite the hazardous conditions involved, he successfully directed the fighter aircraft on the hostile mortar positions. As a result of his heroic acts, the mortar positions were silenced and the outpost was saved from possible loss of many lives. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Captain Sheward reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
