Specialist Four Lester M. Danley Class of 2009

Bronze Star

United States Army

Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device
Citation

For heroism, not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Four Danley distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 10 December 1967, while serving as a machine gunner with Company D, 1st Battalion (Mechanized), 50th Infantry during a combat mission near Bong Son, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became engaged with a large enemy force, Specialist Danley exposed himself to the hostile fire as he provided covering fire, enabling his wounded comrades to be evacuated. When another armor personnel carrier was hit by enemy fire, Specialist Danley, disregarding his own safety, moved his vehicle between the enemy fire and the disabled vehicle. He then once again exposed himself to the hostile fire as he placed effective suppressive fire on the enemy, inflicting numerous hostile casualties. Specialist Danley's display of personal bravery and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest standards of the military service, and reflects great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
