Warrant Officer One James A. Adams Class of 2009

Distinguished Flying Cross

United States Army

Distinguished Flying Cross
Citation

For heroism while participating in aerial flight evidenced by voluntary actions above and beyond the call of duty: Warrant Officer Adams distinguished himself while leading his light fireteam of armed UH-1C helicopters and one UH-1D flare helicopter in support of an outpost which was under heavy Viet Cong mortar attack. He made repeated attacks on the insurgent mortar positions and received heavy automatic weapons fire from emplacements intended to protect the mortars. The flare ship which was circling the area high above suddenly called that he was going down. The flare ship made a successful autorotation but landed a mere 200 meters from the enemy infested treeline. Now the bulk of the hostile enemy fire was directed at the stricken aircraft. Warrant Officer Adams expended the remainder of his ordnance on the entrenched enemy and began flying low level between the insurgents and the downed aircraft to draw the hostile fire to his own aircraft. This gave the downed crew time to get out of the stricken helicopter and organize. As soon as the downed crew were out of the aircraft he flew his heavily loaded helicopter in and picked them up. His actions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
