For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force: On 25 August 1966, Sergeant Turpin was serving as a G-3 Operations Sergeant when two infantry battalions, heavily engaged with a reinforced Viet Cong battalion, reported a shortage of ammunition. Realizing the seriousness of the situation, Sergeant Turpin , in conjunction with the deputy G-3, arranged for mixed loads of ammunition and four utility helicopters to be brought to the scene and personally assisted in loading the supplies. Sergeant Turpin rode the second helicopter to the battalion landing zone which was obscured by smoke from grass fires. In spite of this, he directed his helicopter into the landing zone and delivered the ammunition, receiving direct insurgent fire throughout the entire maneuver. Sergeant Turpin returned to the headquarters, loaded ammunition for another battalion, directed his helicopter to the unit’s landing zone and, while receiving small arms fire, delivered the desperately needed ammunition. He personally assisted in evacuating casualties from this unit after the medical evacuation helicopter had been disabled. Again returning to battalion headquarters, he then procured food and water, delivered these items, and once again evacuated casualties upon his departure. Throughout this four hour period, Sergeant Turpin subjected himself to Viet Cong fire and, with complete disregard for his personal safety, successfully accomplished his mission. Staff Sergeant Turpin’s outstanding display of aggressiveness, devotion to duty and personal bravery is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit upon himself, the 1st Infantry Division and the United States Army.
