Citation
For gallantry in action: Sergeant Leapley distinguished himself by heroic actions on 1 February 1970, while attached to Troop B, 3d Squadron, 4th Cavalry as an artillery reconnaissance sergeant in the Republic of Vietnam. While on a reconnaissance operation, an element of Troop B came in contact with a large enemy force suffering several casualties. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Leapley checked the casualties in his immediate area, moving the fatally wounded platoon leader out of the contact area and aiding in the evacuation of the remaining casualties. Then Sergeant Leapley began placing devastating fire on enemy positions to provide security for the medical evacuation helicopter. His valorous actions were responsible for saving the lives of several fellow soldiers. Sergeant Leapley’s bravery, aggressiveness and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 25th Infantry Division and the United States Army.
