Airman First Class Michael D. Hensgen Class of 2008

Bronze Star Medal with "V" Device

United States Air Force

Bronze Star Medal with “V” Device
Citation

Airman First Class Michael D. Hensgen distinguished himself by heroism while engaged in ground operations against an opposing armed force at the Tan Son Nhut Air Base, Republic of Vietnam on 31 January 1968. On that date, a well-armed hostile force of 600 men penetrated the base perimeter. Airman Hensgen was positioned some 50 meters from the breach in the fence and poured automatic weapons and small arms fire on the attacking forces, delaying the progress sufficiently to enable defensive forces to deploy. Facing tremendous odds, he maintained his position until lack of ammunition forced him to withdraw. At his new position he obtained a new supply of ammunition and continued to inflict heavy losses on the advancing hostile forces. By his heroic actions and unselfish dedication to duty, Airman Hensgen has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
