For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy in the British Solomon Islands on October 14-15, 1942. Private Burris and another marine from the Communications Section of a Pioneer Battalion was assigned to a company during the time that this company was receiving concentrated field artillery fire. Repeatedly during these two days, these men, with no regard for their own safety, went out and repaired wire lines that had been cut by shellfire, and enabled this company to maintain communications with its platoons and with the battalion command post, almost uninterruptedly despite the repeated destruction to the wire lines.
