Specialist Four Larry J. Wells Class of 2005

					Distinguished Flying Cross

United States Army

Bronze Star with "V" Device
Citation

For heroism in connection with military operations against a hostile force. Specialist Four Wells distinguished himself by heroism in action on 31 May 1967, while serving as a rigger with the 227th Aviation Battalion (Assault Helicopter) during an aircraft recovery mission near Bong Son, Republic of Vietnam. While rigging a downed UH-1D helicopter for extraction, Specialist Wells came under enemy automatic weapons fire. When the hostile fire became so intense that the recovery aircraft had to depart the area, Specialist Wells volunteered to remain with the downed aircraft. With complete disregard for his own safety, Specialist Wells stayed with the downed helicopter until it could be extracted. His courageous action and devotion to duty are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service, and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the United States Army.
