Citation

Phillip E, Heffner, Jr., 15121109, Private First Class (then Private), Company C, 16th Infantry. For heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy in the vicinity of Colleville-sur-Mer, Normandy, France, 7 June 1944. When his assault unit was forced into a precarious position during a bitter engagement with the foe, Private Heffner unhesitatingly crossed perilous terrain through an intense barrage of rifle and automatic-weapons fire and informed friendly troops of the situation. Private Heffner’s heroic actions an unflinching devotion to duty saved his organization many casualties and contributed materially to the ultimate success of the operation. Residence at enlistment: Columbus, Ohio.
