BRONZE STAR MEDAL WITH “V” DEVICE

Citation

Specialist 4th Class La Monte Hayden. For heroism not involving participation in aerial flight, in connection with military operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Specialist Four Hayden distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 12 May 1968, while serving with Company B, 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry during a search mission near Ky Lam, Republic of Vietnam. When his unit became heavily engaged with a large enemy force and sustained several casualties, Specialist Hayden exposed himself to the hostile fire as he crossed an open area numerous times in order to evacuate several of his wounded comrades to safety. His display of personal bravery and devotion to duty is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflects great credit on himself, his unit and the United States Army.
