Citation

Private First Class Gilbert A. Babbs. For heroic service in connection with military operations against the enemy on Leyte on November 4, 1944. While acting as a volunteer rear guard for a group of three litter squads carrying wounded soldiers to an aid station, Private First Class Babbs and two other men held off an estimated fifteen enemy soldiers armed with a heavy machine gun until the wounded were in a place of safety. Private First Class Babbs’ devotion to the welfare of his comrades was in the highest tradition of the military service.
