BRONZE STAR MEDAL WITH “V” DEVICE

Citation

Sergeant Stephen M. Thompson. For heroism in connection with ground operations against a hostile force in the Republic of Vietnam. Sergeant Thompson distinguished himself by valorous actions on 23 July 1970, as a member of a Reconnaissance Team of the 2nd Battalion (Airborne) 503rd Infantry, during a raid conducted near Bong Son. Alerted to the location of an enemy Base Camp by the Team Leader, Sergeant Thompson and two other men crawled to within ten meters of the Base Camp, which was occupied by ten armed VC/NVA. Seeing five more armed enemy entering the camp, the Team Leader initiated contact, killing two immediately. Sergeant Thompson, with complete disregard for his own safety, moved from a position of cover so that he could fire effectively on the enemy. Although the enemy was returning fire, Sergeant Thompson did not waiver, but continued to fire until the enemy was routed. Through his courage, he contributed immeasurably to the success of the mission. Sergeant Thompson’s personal bravery and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
